How to Participate
There are three primary ways in which you can participate in the Climb Against Cancer:
- Become a sponsor
- Make an in-kind donation
- Hike, Bike or Run
Sponsors give money to help us offset the cost of our event expenses. There is a list of sponsor levels and benefits associated with your level of giving.
Those who make in-kind donation give us items that we need for the event, so that we don't have to rent or buy them. Examples are tents, food, and prizes.
Bike or Run
NEW THIS YEAR… the opportunity to run up the mountain! Join the White Mountain Milers as they resurrect the old Cranmore Hill Climb race course. Register for the event just as you would as if you would be hiking; at registration you will sign up for the running event. For more information, call or send e mail to the Milers' President, Paul Kirsch, at 603-367-8676 or pkirsch@roadrunner.com for more information.
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND… the opportunity to bike at the event! For the second year, the local chapter of the New England Mountain Bike Association (NEMBA), led by Rob Adair, will be participating. This year, the mountain bike rides will be led by NEMBA members. An advanced ride will climb the Cranmore access road and the Cranmore Connector and then descend the Red Tail Trail. An easier ride will follow the power lines to Sticks & Stones and return to Cranmore.
Hike, Bike or Run
If you choose to hike, bike or run, you may do so alone or as part of a team. Remember, as a participant in this event, you are not just a hiker, biker or runner - you are also a fundraiser! The money you raise will go directly to our clients - paying their non-medical bills.
How do I form a team?
A team can include as many or as few people as you want. Consider asking your friends, family members or co-workers to commit to making a difference together! Think of a Team Name and choose a Team Captain.
Team format:
Teams will compete in one of two categories:
- teams with 10 or fewer members
- teams with 11+ members
How do I raise money?
Basically, you will be asking people to give money to sponsor you on this hike, bike, or run. Consider asking friends, neighbors, associates, former classmates, family friends, members of clubs, alumni groups, etc. Cancer affects many people in many different ways. Keep in mind that in order to give, people need to be given the opportunity to do so - they need to be asked! In addition to face-to-face requests for donations, consider writing a fundraising letter or email in which you talk about the Climb Against Cancer and your reasons for participating.
How do I track sponsors and their pledges?
Use the "Jen's Friend's Pledge Form" to keep track of your sponsors and their gifts. (Please be sure to include contact information for all of your sponsors so that they can be thanked for their gifts!) On the day of the Climb, bring the Pledge Form with you, along with all of the money, in order to qualify for prizes. All checks should be made payable to Jen's Friends Cancer Foundation.
What to Bring
Be sure to come prepared for any type of weather! This event is held in sunshine and rain, cool weather and hot.
Wear comfortable foot wear with good support. You might want to carry a day pack with sunscreen, insect repellant, and a camera. Although there will be water stops along the hiking trail, you may want to carry an extra bottle.
Awards
There are awards for the individual participant as well as for teams.
The individual hiker, biker, or runner and the winning team in each category (small team; large team) will win a Hiking Pole.
These are not ordinary hiking poles, but ones that have been specially decorated to be displayed as trophies.
In addition, the top three individual fund raisers also get awards.
From North Conway Village:
Landmarks for North Conway include the park and train station on the left, Zeb's Country Store on the right, and The Met coffee house on the left. At the traffic lights, take a right onto Kearsage Street and follow to the end. At the end, take a left onto Kearsage Road. Then take a right onto Skimobile Road and follow signs to the parking area.
Alternate Route from Conway Village:
Instead of turning left at the lights on Route 16, drive straight on Routes 113/302 until the next set of traffic lights. Turn left onto Route 302 and then take a right onto North South Local Road at the next set of lights (Wal*Mart will be on your right). At the end of this road (4-way STOP signs) turn right onto Kearsage Street. Then follow directions above.
